The LGV Driving Instructor Course has been developed to assist an individual to gain full ' Qualified Driving Standards Agency (DSA) LGV Instructor' recognition.
The course is for experienced LGV drivers who are involved, or wish to be involved, in the provision of driver training within a company, and wish to prepare and teach others the necessary skills that are required to pass the DSA LGV Driving Test.
Trainees are taught both in the classroom and out on the road using a modern 3 seated training vehicle.
The DSA Examinations are split into 3 stages;
Part 1, Touch Screen Based Theory Test
A multiple choice theory test split into four bands. One hundred questions in total, 25 per band, need to be answered in 60 minutes. The overall pass mark is 85%. However, you must reach a minimum pass mark of 80% in each band.
A hazard perception test is also taken at the end of the theory test.
Part 2, Practical Test of Driving Ability
The practical test is taken at a DSA Driving Test Centre, examined by a Senior Driving Examiner. The test will last approximately 90 minutes and will include all the usual elements of a standard LGV driving test.
The test is not just a slightly more difficult driving test. Candidates must demonstrate that they have a thorough knowledge of road safety and apply them in all situations.
Part 3, Practical Test of Instructional Ability
The instructional test is also taken with a Senior Driving Examiner at a DSA Driving Test Centre. The objective of the test is to examine your ability to instruct others, to pass on and relate information to trainee drivers.
The examiner will adopt the role of a trainee and will explain the role adopted. This will allow you to pitch the level of instruction correctly and to plan your lesson with him/her accordingly. The examiner will drive the vehicle as per the role adopted simulating common and possible faults. You will at this point be expected to identify faults, analyse the possible reasons why they are being made, and explain what should be done in the future to avoid repeating the faults.
The basis of the lesson plan will be from one off the nine pre-set exercises below.
1. Safety precautions / Controls / Move off and stop
2. Signs, signals and road markings / Braking exercise
3. General driving / Gear change exercise / Reversing
4. Mirrors / Uncouple - recouple
5. Judgement of speed / Positioning
6. Junctions (turning in and emerging) and roundabouts and junctions
7. Approaching / Turning at crossroads / Roundabouts and junctions
8. Meet approaching traffic, overtake / Anticipate the action of others
9. Remedial lesson after test failure
You must take and pass all three parts of the exam and complete the whole qualifying process within one year. You can only have a maximum of three attempts of each test. In the event of failing on the third attempt of any of the tests, you will need to wait until the end of the 1 year period before restarting the qualification process again.
Any course booking is subject to a prior assessment to determine the current aptitude and ability of the candidate.
